Recordings

Šunen, šunen, Romalen is a popular dance song about the devotion of a lover. Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos often sang it at public performances because the dance song enables interaction with the audience.

This recording of Šunen, Šunen, Romalen was made during a Lovari festival at the Amerlinghaus in 1993.

Commentary

(GERMAN ONLY) During a field research interview, Manuela Nikolić, the daughter of Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos and Mišo Nikolić, explains the content of Šunen, šunen, Romalen.

Šunen, šunen, Romalen, Listen, listen, Roma,
so Roma so von vorbin, what all the other Roma are saying,
a šeja von mangen, la šukara šeja, they want to woo the girl, the beautiful girl,
aj me pala late merav. for whom I am dying (of love).

Stanza 2

Muk den tu avereske Let them give you to someone else,
aj tu kam te rovesa, but you will cry,
ke vi tu man kames, sar vi me tut kamav, because you love me too, just as I love you,
aj me pala tute merav. I am dying for you.

Stanza 3

Ke tu san šej šukar hej, Because you are so beautiful, girl,
kaj phabon tje duj jakha, because your two eyes shine,
kaj phabon tje jakha sar duj čerhaja because your eyes shine like two stars,
aj me pala tute merav. (3x) I am dying for you. (3x)
