Po motori bešlem
Content
Recordings
Since Po motori bešlem is so well-known among the Roma, it has the character of an anthem. There are different text variants, all of which have the first part, the loss of the woman, in common. It is also striking that the song is partly in dialog form and the couple communicate directly in the second verse.
At the end of the song, Ruža says Sa tja patjivake, Uschi, thus honouring the ethnomusicologist Ursula Hemetek, who made the recording and became a close confidante of the singer over the years. In a way, this means that Ruža is presenting the researcher with her song and wants to make her happy.
Lyrics
Stanza 1
Jaj de po motori bešlem, ande Pešta tradem, | I went to Budapest by car, |
jaj de kote line mandar mura sana gaža. | there, they stole my delicate wife from me. |
Jaj de te line la mandar, t’ al lenge baxtali hej, | If they have already stolen her from me, she should bring them luck. |
t’al lenge baxtali jaj de po grastengo foro. | She should bring them luck at the next horse market. |
Stanza 2
Tordjuv avri, čore, jaj de šorom lenijaba, | Come out, stand there |
sikhav ande, šeje, savo-j tjo piramno. | and say who your sweetheart is. |
Jaj de kuko kalo šavo phagade balengo hej, | The dark boy with the curls, |
ko kerel i voja jaj de ži pe de teharin. | who parties until the morning. |
Stanza 3
Mang mol, phrali, mang mol jaj de le bute Romenge, | Order wine, my friend, for all the Roma, |
te kerav e voja jaj de vi mange v‘avreske. | I want to bring joy, for them and for me. |
Tranda taj duj glaži jaj de le faloske maro hej, | I will throw thirty-two bottles against the wall |
mura sana gaža jaj de paša ma tordjaro. | and I'll put my delicate wife next to me. |
Stanza 4
Apal phendas: | And again he said: |
Jaj te trajij, tranda taj šov glaži, e faloske maro hej, | Let her live, I'll throw 36 bottles against the wall, |
mura sana gaža jaj de rextsumba tordjaro. | and I'll put my wife right next to me. |
Sa tja pakjivake, Uschi. Me gindij ke šukar gjili, na? | In your honour, Uschi. I think that's a beautiful song, isn’t it? |
