Recordings

Sas ma mami doste love belongs to the loke gila, the slow songs. The recording was made in 1992 at the Nikolić family home.

musical transcription

This song is well-known and beloved among the Lovari community in Vienna. It was also a favourite of Ceija Stojka (1933–2013). It represents the musical and lyrical characteristics of loke gila. The lament of a man about his wife who has left him is addressed to his mother. Such a motif is common for loke gila.

Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos and The Gypsy Family perform Sas ma mami doste love at the Interkulttheater in 1995. Although the recording is briefly interrupted, it is worth listening to, especially due to the sensitive and stylistically confident guitar accompaniment.

This recording was made by Mozes F. Heinschink in December 1968 in the Nikolić family’s caravan house. Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos’ brother and other guests can be heard singing along. Other immediate reactions are also audible. The recording shows the interactive character that these songs have in a traditional context.

Commentary

(GERMAN ONLY) Ethnomusicologist Ursula Hemetek introduces Sas ma mami doste love during a performance by Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos and Mišo Nikolić at the Interkulttheater in 1993 and refers to its content.
