Ruža Šej is based on the melody of the Adagio from Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez which premiered in Barcelona in 1940. It became popular through numerous adaptations by different orchestras and artists. Mišo Nikolić wrote lyrics in Romani to the melody, and Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos incorporated her own name into it. She emphasized several times that the song was one of her favourites. The Gypsy Family also named one of their CDs after the song.
Lyrics
Stanza 1
Ruža šej, sostar gelantar taj man muklan? | Ruža, girl, why did you leave, why did you abandon me? |
Anda kodo muro ilo, Ruža šeje, mindig dukhal, | Because of this, girl, my heart aches so much. |
ke avres dikhlan taj avres tu kamlan | You fell in love with someone else, |
taj avresa, Ruža, gelan. | with him, Ruža, you went away. |
Stanza 2
Žanesas, ke pala tu, šej, me merav | You knew, Ruža, that I would die out of love for you, |
ke pala tu muro trajo taj so godi sas te dav. | that I would have given everything, even my life, for you. |
Akanik korkoro či žanav, | Now I don’t know anymore |
kaj te žav tut te rodav. | where to go to find you. |
Refrain
Šoha me kadi dukh, Ruža, či bristav, | Never, Ruža, will I forget the pain. |
či bristav anda kodo ke me tut kamav | I won’t forget it because I love you, |
pala tute, šeje, me merav | out of love for you, girl, I die, |
pala tu, Ruža, me merav. | out of love for you, Ruža, I die. |
Stanza 3
Mangav tu, mangav tu, avtar palpale. | I beg you, come back again. |
Ax, Devlam, sa so godi si te jertonav lake, | Oh God, I will forgive her everything, |
anda kodo, ke me la kamav. | because I love her. |
pala tu, Ruža, me merav, | Out of love for you, Ruža, I die, |
pala tu, Ruža, me merav. | Out of love for you, Ruža, I die. |
