Recordings

This recording of Phenelas mange ke kamel ma is on the CD Ruzsa Shej which Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos and The Gypsy Family released in 1999.

This song is in the style of loke gila, yet it is clearly a new song for its melodic and formal design. At the beginning of her stage performances, Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos rarely sang this song, but it became increasingly important to her during later performances. She chose this song for special events at the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, such as its 50th-anniversary celebration in 2015 or the memorial for Gerlinde Haid in 2013 (see video).

Commentary

Video

Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos sings Phenelas mange ke kamel during an event marking the first anniversary of Gerlinde Haid’s death at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 2013. She dedicates the song to the researcher in a personal a cappella version. This performance is remarkable in several ways: It shows Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos’ direct communication with the audience and she includes the deceased in her words. Musically, this a cappella version is an example of the expressive quality of Ruža’s singing, for which it is not necessary to understand the language.
