Recordings

Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos performs Jaj de dural, dural accompanied by her husband Mišo Nikolić during a performance at the Interkulttheater in 1995.

musical transcription

This old song is about the Romani community and the position of an individual in it. It addresses conflicts, and the singer inserts the Romani group that fits the context of the performance. It could be about the ‘Hungarian’, ‘German’, or ‘Viennese’ Roma. The following recordings were mostly performed in front of a Romani audience, which is why the text is also adapted as described.

Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos and The Gypsy Family perform Jaj de dural, dural me avilem during a performance at the Interkulttheater in 2002. The song is very well received by the audience, with frequent applause and cheers. The singer responds with formulaic wishes.

Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos and The Gypsy Family published this version of Jaj de dural, dural me avilem on their CD E trin worbi.

This recording of Jaj de dural, dural was made by Mozes F. Heinschink at the Nikolić family home in 1997. Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos sings in the presence of Slovakian guests, who introduce the song with wishing formulas, converse and sing along with the line endings. It is a recording that reflects the traditional performance context of the slow songs very well.
